Coqui XTTS Alternative for Commercial Game Voices

Coqui TTS and its XTTS model made high-quality open-source voice cloning available to everyone, and many game developers prototyped character voices with it.

Two things are worth knowing before you build a commercial game on it.

Coqui's situation in 2026

• The company is gone. Coqui shut down around the start of 2024, and its hosted service went offline.
• The code lives on. A community fork maintained by Idiap continues development and publishes the coqui-tts package.
• The XTTS weights are non-commercial. XTTS-v2 is released under the Coqui Public Model License, which allows only non-commercial use of the model and its outputs. With the company closed, there is no obvious way to buy a commercial licence.
• You host it yourself. There is no vendor support, no Unity or Unreal SDK, and you run the GPU.

For research and hobby projects, it is still a great tool. For a game you plan to sell, the licence is a problem.
