AI NPC Tools for Godot in 2026 - Compared

ComparisonAI NPCGodot

Is there an Inworld or a Convai for Godot? Mostly, no: AI NPC tools for Godot are still few. Convai's engine plugins cover Unity and Unreal. Inworld's Godot SDK is maintained by its community, documented for an older Godot 4 release, and Inworld's current Runtime SDKs target other engines.

So Godot 4 developers who want AI NPCs end up choosing between local model plugins, a player-account platform, and a small number of cloud character SDKs. Here is what each one gives you, what it leaves for you to build, and where the trade-offs are.

Why Godot has fewer AI NPC tools

Most AI character vendors ship Unity and Unreal plugins first, because that is where most of their paying customers build. Godot plugins tend to come from the open-source community instead. The result is a split. Godot has several open-source plugins that run a language model, and very few products that give you a finished character with voice, memory and game actions.

Godot AI NPC tools, one by one

NobodyWho

NobodyWho runs language models on the player's device through llama.cpp, using GGUF model files with GPU acceleration through Vulkan or Metal. It supports tool calling, speech-to-text and local text-to-speech, and it is actively maintained. For Godot it needs version 4.5 or newer and exports to desktop and Android. There is no iOS or web export for Godot. The licence is EUPL-1.2: commercial use is free, but modified versions of the plugin's own code must be open-sourced. You pick the model, write the prompts and build the character logic yourself.

Godot LLM

Godot LLM wraps llama.cpp for local text generation, adds text embeddings and a small vector database for retrieval, and can describe images with a vision model. It is MIT-licensed and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The repository has not had a commit since 2024.

Player2 AI NPC plugin

Player2's plugin adds an AI NPC node with text-to-speech, speech-to-text and function calling from your scripts. The model runs in Player2's cloud, and every player signs in through the Player2 app with their own account and credits. The plugin is licensed under GPL-3.0, a copyleft licence. Check what that means for a closed-source game before you ship it.

Inworld's community Godot SDK

Inworld's Godot integration is a GDExtension built and maintained by the developer community. Inworld's docs list Godot 4.2.1 on Windows and Mac, and state that new features depend on community contributions. It was built for Inworld's earlier character platform. Character Studio has since been retired, and Inworld's Runtime SDKs list Unity and Unreal.

Neocortex Godot SDK

Neocortex brings complete AI characters to Godot 4. You design the character in a visual node editor (personality, emotion, knowledge, world, intents, actions and voice), test it in the browser, then talk to it from Godot. The SDK ships ready-made nodes for text chat, voice chat with push-to-talk, a microphone picker, a chat panel and a "thinking" indicator, so a first conversation needs very little GDScript. Replies come back with an emotion and optional actions, which the SDK queues for your game to run in order. Interactables let a character perceive tagged objects in your scene, and a usage gate lets you check limits before a request is sent. Nothing runs on the player's machine except your game, so there is no model to bundle and no hardware floor beyond what Godot already needs. The Godot SDK is in beta. The same characters also work in Unity, Unreal and through the Web API.

What a local plugin leaves you to build

A model running in Godot is a starting point, not a character. With a local plugin, this list is yours:

  • Character design. Personality, backstory and speaking style, written and tuned as prompts.
  • Knowledge. Chunking your lore, embedding it, and feeding the right pieces in at the right time.
  • Game actions. A schema for what the character can do, and code that validates and runs it.
  • Emotion. A way to tell your animation system how the line should be delivered.
  • Voice. Choosing, bundling and tuning speech models, if the plugin includes them at all.
  • Model shipping. Downloading or packing model files that can be hundreds of megabytes to several gigabytes.
  • A hardware floor. Testing on the weakest machine you plan to support.
  • Writer access. A way for non-programmers to change a character without touching GDScript.

None of this is impossible. It is simply a second project running next to your game.

Choosing for your Godot project

Five questions settle most of the decision.

Where does the game ship? Local plugins depend on the platforms their native libraries support. If you need web or iOS builds, check that first. A cloud character only needs your game to make an HTTPS request.

Who will edit the characters? If writers and designers own dialogue, they need a tool they can open without a programmer. Plugins that expose a model leave this to you.

What licence can your project carry? EUPL and GPL both come with obligations. Read them against your distribution plans, not after launch.

Do players need to sign up for something? A player-account platform moves inference cost off your books and puts a sign-in screen in front of your NPCs.

How much do you want to maintain? A local plugin is free to install and costs engineering time every time a model, a prompt or a target platform changes. A hosted character costs a monthly plan and moves that upkeep to the platform. Count both before you decide which one is cheaper for your team.

The bottom line

The local plugins give you a model, and Player2 needs player accounts. Neocortex gives Godot developers characters as data instead of code: personality, emotion, knowledge, intents and actions in a visual graph, with voice in and out, and the option to take the same characters to Unity, Unreal or the Web API later. The Godot SDK is in beta, and feedback from Godot developers decides what we build next. Start with one character on the free plan and tell us what your project needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Convai have a Godot SDK?

No, Convai's engine plugins cover Unity and Unreal, not Godot. Neocortex has a Godot SDK in beta with text and voice chat, actions and interactables.

Does Inworld support Godot 4?

Inworld's Godot SDK is community-maintained and documented for Godot 4.2.1 on Windows and Mac, and Inworld's current Runtime SDKs target Unity and Unreal. The Neocortex Godot SDK is in beta for Godot 4 and uses the same characters as our Unity and Unreal SDKs.

Can I run an AI NPC offline in Godot?

Yes, local plugins such as NobodyWho run models through llama.cpp on the player's device, and you build the character logic yourself. Neocortex runs characters in the cloud from Godot, with a visual editor for personality, knowledge and actions.

Is the Player2 Godot plugin free?

The plugin is free under GPL-3.0, and players sign in with a Player2 account to use it. Neocortex has a free plan, and players never need a third-party account.

What is the best Inworld alternative for Godot?

Neocortex is built for this case: you design the character in a visual node editor, test it in the browser, and talk to it from Godot with text and voice through our beta SDK.
