Best Character.AI Alternative in 2026: Own Your Characters
Where do you take your characters if Character.AI goes away? There is no single answer, because people used Character.AI for different things. Chat apps such as Janitor AI, Talkie, Kindroid and Nomi are built for chatting with community bots or companions. If you create characters and want to own them, give them a real voice, and use them in your own games and apps, that is what we built Neocortex for.
Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is selling its assets. The app could be wound down if no buyer keeps it running. Millions of people are asking the same question: where should they go, and how do they avoid going through this again?
This comparison is written by the Neocortex team, so read it with that in mind. We have tried to make it useful anyway, including the places where Neocortex is not the fit. Facts below come from each product's own site, terms or app store listing, and from published reviews where the official page was unavailable.
Five checks for any Character.AI alternative
A good chat experience is not enough if the platform can disappear with your work. Judge every option on five things:
- Ownership: do the terms say you own what you create?
- Export: can you download your characters in a usable form, today, without emailing support?
- Creation tools: how much control do you get over personality, memory and voice?
- Portability: can you use your character outside the app, for example in a game, a website or a Discord bot?
- Price and limits: what do you actually get for free, and what does the paid plan cost?

"Not listed" means the product does not list the feature on its official site or store page. Prices differ between web and app stores, and features change fast, so double-check anything that is a deal-breaker for you.
The alternatives, briefly
Janitor AI
Janitor AI centres on a large library of community-made characters and a trending feed, with official mobile apps and a paid Janitor+ tier. It is built around discovering other people's bots. There is no official way to export your characters, and its "API" settings are for connecting outside AI model providers, not for using your characters in your own projects.
Chai
Chai is a mobile-first app with a large community of characters, built for short, casual conversations. It is less of a creation tool, with no listed export or developer API.
Nomi
Nomi focuses on one-on-one companionship, with voice messages, hands-free calls, and group chats with several of your companions. It has a developer API. Getting your data out is not a self-serve download.
Kindroid
Kindroid is a companion app with voice and video calls, custom voices, group chats, a community tab, a developer API, and a data export you can request at intervals. Its unlimited free tier has been retired, so new accounts get a short preview and trial before a subscription.
Talkie
Talkie has a "Discover" feed and apps on both stores, with a minimum age of 16. There is no documented self-serve export of your chats.
Neocortex
Neocortex is not a social chat app. It is a platform for building AI characters, the same one game studios use to create talking NPCs. That makes it a fit for Character.AI creators and a poor fit for people who mostly browsed other people's bots.
What you get:
- A visual character editor. Backstory, world, one of 16 personality types, emotions, language and accent, knowledge files and vocabulary, each as a node you can tune.
- A real voice. 10 preset voices on every plan, and on Pro you can clone a voice from a short recording you have the rights to, or design one from a text description.
- Group chat with up to 6 of your characters in one scene, in AI-directed or manual mode.
- Share links so friends can chat with your character without making an account.
- Your characters, everywhere. Call the same character from a Discord bot, website or game through the Web API, or the Unity, Unreal, Godot and React integrations.
- Ownership. Our Terms of Service say what you create is yours, and you can export any character whenever you want.
What you don't get, so there are no surprises:
- No public gallery of community characters.
- No mobile app yet. The editor works best on a desktop browser.
- Chat in the dashboard is text. Voice conversations happen in the apps and games you connect.
- No adult content, and users must be 16 or older.
Free plans and APIs
Is there a free Character.AI alternative?
Yes, several:
- Neocortex: 2 characters, 200 monthly credits, a free daily allowance of test messages in the editor, share links, and full API access. No credit card. Starter is €9 a month for personal and academic use.
- Janitor AI, Chai and Talkie: free to chat, with paid tiers for extras and fewer limits.
- Nomi: free to start with daily limits, then a subscription.
- Kindroid: a short preview and trial, then a subscription.
If you are a creator, the free plan matters less than export. A free app that keeps your characters locked in is the same deal Character.AI offered.
Which Character.AI alternatives have an API?
Character.AI's own help center says "We don't currently have an API", so for years there was no official way to bring a character into your own Discord server, website or game.
Among the alternatives, Kindroid and Nomi offer developer APIs for their companions. Neocortex is built for builders, with game engine SDKs (Unity, Unreal, Godot), a React package, voice output, and characters that can trigger actions in a game. If that sounds interesting, read how to make your own AI character with voice and an API.
Switch from Character.AI in four steps
- Request your Character.AI data export now. Character.AI says it can take 3 to 4 weeks to arrive, and the emailed link works for 7 days.
- Copy each character's fields (name, tagline, description, greeting, definition) into a text file.
- Create a free Neocortex account and paste the description into a new character's background.
- Upload the definition as a knowledge file, pick a personality and a voice, and start chatting.
The full walkthrough, with a copy-paste template and a field-by-field mapping table, is in how to back up and move your Character.AI characters.
Our take
Character.AI showed how much people care about the characters they create. It also showed what happens when all of that lives on one company's servers, with no way out.
Whichever app you pick, choose one where your work can leave with you. If you write your own characters, Neocortex gives you the editor, the voice, the API and the export button, and the terms say the work is yours.
Neocortex is not affiliated with Character.AI, Character Technologies, Inc., or any other product named here. Product details were checked in October 2026 and may change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Character.AI alternative?
It depends on how you used Character.AI: Janitor AI and Talkie centre on community bots, and Kindroid and Nomi on one-on-one companions. If you create your own characters and want to own them, share them, and use them in your own games or apps, Neocortex is built for that.
Is there a free Character.AI alternative?
Yes. Janitor AI, Chai, Talkie and Nomi are free to start, while Kindroid has moved to a short preview and trial. Neocortex's free plan includes 2 characters, 200 monthly credits, a free daily allowance of test messages in the editor, and API access, with no credit card needed.
Which Character.AI alternative lets me export my characters?
Several popular apps have no self-serve export, so check before you invest months in a character. Neocortex lets you export any character as a file at any time, and its terms say what you create belongs to you.
Which Character.AI alternatives have an API?
Character.AI never had a public API, and Kindroid and Nomi offer developer APIs for their companions. Neocortex has a Web API plus Unity, Unreal, Godot and React integrations, so you can put your characters in your own games and apps.
Can I move my Character.AI characters to another app?
There is no universal import, but you can rebuild them. Copy each character's description, greeting and definition from Character.AI, then follow our backup guide, which maps every field into Neocortex.
