The Best Inworld AI Alternative for Game Developers in 2026
If you shipped AI NPCs on Inworld a couple of years ago, the tool you integrated has been retired. Inworld has closed its legacy Character Studio, its old package on the Unity Asset Store is deprecated, and the company now describes itself as a builder of "models and inference for consumer applications". Teams searching for an Inworld AI alternative usually want one thing back: a place where designers build the character and engineers drop it into the game.
This post covers what Inworld retired, what its replacement asks of your team, how Inworld concepts map onto Neocortex, and how to move your characters over in five steps.
What Inworld retired
Inworld's deprecation notice lists everything that went with Character Studio:
- characters and scenes
- knowledge
- triggers and variables
- interactions and integrations
- the voice studio and custom pronunciations
- player profiles
The Inworld package on the Unity Asset Store is marked as deprecated: it is no longer for sale and the publisher no longer supports it. Existing owners can still download it, but it will not get fixes for new Unity versions or new platforms.
In its place, Inworld points developers to two things. The Inworld Portal handles API keys, billing and observability. The Agent Runtime is a graph-based SDK where you rebuild characters from templates: a Character template for Unity and Unreal Engine, and a Voice Agent template for Node.js. Knowledge, voice and player data move into runtime components or into your own application code.
What the Agent Runtime asks of your team
The Runtime is code-first. That changes who owns the character, and it changes the work list for a game team:
- Character behaviour moves to engineers. Personality and dialogue rules live in a runtime graph and in code, not in a studio your writers can open.
- Triggers and variables become your logic. Inworld's own guidance is to rebuild them with the Runtime graph and your application code.
- Knowledge needs wiring. You set up retrieval with the Runtime's knowledge primitives.
- Usage is metered per service. Text-to-speech is billed per million characters, speech-to-text per hour and LLM inference per token, all deducted from credits. You can pay as you go or buy a monthly plan, with plans starting at $25.
The product direction matters too. Inworld's homepage lists companions, learning, health and fitness, social apps and personal agents as its markets, and leads with realtime voice models and hosted open LLMs. Unity and Unreal are not mentioned there. If your roadmap depends on game-specific features, that is worth weighing before you rebuild on the Runtime.

How Inworld concepts map to Neocortex
Most of what you built in Character Studio has a direct home in the Neocortex node editor:
- Character description becomes an Agent node, with a Personality node for traits and speaking style.
- Knowledge becomes a Knowledge node. Upload the lore, item lists or quest notes as PDF or TXT files.
- Scenes become a World node that tells the character where it is and what is going on.
- Triggers and goals become Intents (what the player is trying to do) and Actions (what the character does in your game).
- Emotions become an Emotion node for the starting mood. Every reply line also carries an emotion tag you can drive animation from.
- Voice studio becomes the Voice, Language and Accent nodes. Pick a voice, clone one from a short sample you have the rights to, or design one from a text description. Pro includes 5 custom voices and Team includes 20.
- Scene interactions become the Objects node. Your game sends nearby objects and recent events, and the character can refer to them and act on them.
For authored story beats, Conversation Flows branch the conversation and return checkpoint keywords (flowState) your game listens for.
Move your characters in five steps
- Collect your source material. Character Studio is gone, so your design docs and project files are now the record. Gather each character's description, facts, sample lines and trigger list.
- Rebuild each character in the editor. Create the Agent and Personality nodes, attach knowledge files, and add Intents and Actions for every trigger your game used. A single character is usually a short session of work.
- Test in the browser. Talk to the character in the editor until it sounds right. In-editor testing never uses credits, so writers can iterate as long as they need.
- Swap the SDK. Remove the deprecated Inworld package, install the Neocortex Unity SDK, open one of the six sample scenes and point it at your character. Unity WebGL builds get microphone support too.
- Reconnect gameplay. Replace your trigger handlers with action handlers. A reply can carry an action such as
OPEN_DOORwith atargetIdofdoor_02, and your code decides what that does in the scene.
Prototype on the free plan. Before you ship a commercial game, move to Pro or Team, since commercial use needs one of those plans. If you lost characters to a vendor change before, our post on AI character vendor shutdowns covers what to keep under your own control.
The bottom line
Inworld now sells voice models and inference and leaves the character to your code. Neocortex keeps the whole character in one editor, its personality, knowledge, actions and voice, and puts it in your Unity, Unreal or Godot project. That is the workflow Character Studio used to offer, and it is the core of what we build.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Inworld Character Studio still available?
No, Inworld retired the legacy Character Studio and points developers to its code-first Agent Runtime. Neocortex keeps character design in a visual browser editor, where you connect Agent, Personality, Knowledge, Intents and Actions nodes.
Does Inworld still have a Unity SDK?
Inworld offers a Unity AI Runtime SDK with a Character template, and its older Unity Asset Store package is deprecated and no longer sold. Neocortex has a Unity SDK for Unity 6 with six sample scenes.
How much does Inworld cost?
Inworld bills text-to-speech, speech-to-text and LLM tokens from usage credits, with a pay-as-you-go tier and monthly plans from $25. Neocortex has a free plan, and commercial games use Pro at EUR 29 a month or Team at EUR 99 a month.
Is Inworld still focused on games?
Inworld now describes itself as models and inference for consumer applications such as companions, learning and social apps. Neocortex is built for AI characters in games, with SDKs for Unity, Unreal Engine 5 and Godot (beta).
What is the best Inworld AI alternative for Unity?
If you want the designer-friendly Character Studio workflow back, Neocortex gives you a visual character editor, free in-editor testing and a Unity SDK with six sample scenes.
