NVIDIA ACE Alternative for Unity Developers
NVIDIA ACE is the most ambitious on-device AI character stack in games right now. It bundles small language models, speech recognition, text-to-speech and Audio2Face facial animation that run on the player's GPU, and it is behind experiments such as PUBG Ally and inZOI's Smart Zoi.
It is also built for a specific kind of team. This post looks at who ACE fits, who it does not, and what Unity developers use instead.
What NVIDIA ACE is in 2026
According to NVIDIA's ACE for Games page (checked October 2026):
- Models: Nemotron small language models, Qwen 3.5 4B, Nemotron ASR, on-device TTS, and Audio2Face-3D with Audio2Emotion.
- SDKs: the Game Agent SDK (C/C++, beta) and the In-Game Inferencing SDK (NVIGI), running on CUDA GPUs and CPUs.
- Engines: Unreal Engine 5 plugins (5.4 to 5.7). No Unity plugin is listed.
- Licensing: plugins and the Audio2Face SDK are MIT, and models use the NVIDIA Open Model License.
That is a toolkit, not a product. You get the building blocks and assemble the character pipeline yourself in C++.
Where ACE is hard for most teams
- No Unity support. If your game is in Unity, you are on your own.
- Built for RTX hardware. Inference is tuned for NVIDIA GPUs, and published titles point to 8GB-class GPUs for on-device characters. Mobile, WebGL, consoles and lower-end PCs are not the target.
- No character editor. Personality, knowledge, guardrails and dialogue structure are your job.
- Still early. Key pieces are in beta or release candidate, and shipped uses are experimental features or limited betas.
For a AAA studio with C++ engineers and an RTX-first PC game, those are reasonable trade-offs. For an indie or mid-size Unity team, they usually are not.
NVIDIA ACE vs Neocortex at a glance
| NVIDIA ACE | Neocortex | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Models and SDKs you assemble | Complete AI character platform |
| Engines | Unreal Engine 5 | Unity, Unreal, Godot (beta), Web API |
| Platforms | RTX PCs | Desktop, mobile and WebGL |
| Character design | Code | Visual node editor |
| Voice | On-device ASR and TTS | Streaming TTS and STT, voice cloning and design |
| Local AI | Fully on-device | Local LLMs in Unity via Ollama, self-hosted deployment for studios |
| Getting started | Assemble the pipeline yourself | Test in minutes in the browser, integrate in hours |
Why Unity teams choose Neocortex
Start in minutes, not sprints. Design a character in the browser, test it there, then install the Unity SDK and run a sample scene. Text chat, voice chat, actions, interactable objects and multi-character scenes all ship as samples.
Designers own the character. Personality, emotion, knowledge, intents and actions are nodes in a visual graph, so writers and designers iterate without waiting for an engineer.
Every platform your players are on. The same character works across desktop, mobile and the web, including microphone input in Unity WebGL builds.
Local AI without a C++ team. Run open models such as Llama, Gemma, Qwen, Mistral and DeepSeek on your own machine through Ollama in Unity, with no RTX requirement. When a project needs the whole platform on your own servers, we offer self-hosted deployment for studios.
When NVIDIA ACE is the right call
If you are an Unreal Engine 5 studio shipping a PC title for RTX players and you have engineers to build the pipeline, ACE gives you deep on-device control and is worth evaluating. For everyone else, a platform that handles the pipeline gets you to a playable character far faster.
