Resemble AI Alternative for Game Voices

ComparisonAI VoiceUnity

Quick answer: Resemble AI no longer sells voice generation to new customers, so a new game project cannot start on it. If you need cloned or designed character voices in Unity, Unreal or Godot, Neocortex gives you voice cloning, voice design and characters that speak those voices at runtime, with a free plan to try it.

Resemble AI was an early name in voice cloning for games. It open-sourced a Unity plugin and marketed runtime text-to-speech to game developers for years. Then Resemble announced it was going all-in on deepfake detection.

What changed at Resemble AI

Resemble's announcement was direct. In its own words, it is "supporting our existing customers but not taking new ones" for voice, and it will not produce new voice models for commercial sale.

The rest of the site followed:

  • Pricing now lists detection, verification and watermarking products only, billed per second of audio or video, per image or per call.
  • The Unity and Unreal integration pages no longer load.
  • The open models move under a Voice AI Research name. Resemble says they stay open and free to build on, but there is no commercial voice product behind them.

So the situation depends on who you are. Existing voice customers keep service for now. Anyone starting a game today has to look elsewhere.

The awkward middle case is a team that evaluated Resemble during pre-production and planned to sign up closer to launch. That plan no longer exists, and the sooner the voice decision is remade, the less dialogue has to be regenerated later. Voice is one of the few systems players notice instantly when it changes between updates.

What a game voice pipeline still needs

Whatever you move to, a game voice setup has to cover more than one feature. Before you compare tools, check your list against this one:

  • A consistent voice per character, cloned from a performer who agreed to it or designed from scratch.
  • Runtime speech, streamed so a reply starts before the whole line is generated.
  • Speech recognition, if players will talk back.
  • An engine integration that handles microphone input and audio playback, including WebGL builds.
  • A licence that covers commercial release.
  • Room to grow, from pre-rendered barks to NPCs that hold a conversation.

Resemble's voice product covered cloning and runtime speech, and its plugins handled part of the engine work. Most voice-only services stop at runtime speech.

Three ways forward for Resemble users

Stay as an existing customer

If you already have a Resemble voice contract, your voices keep working while Resemble supports you. The trade-off is planning around a product its maker has stopped selling: no new commercial voice models, and integration pages that are already gone. Ask your account contact what support covers and for how long, export every voice asset your contract allows, and plan a move before your next large content update. A voice change in the middle of a live game is far more visible than one made between projects.

Self-host the open models

You can run Resemble's open models on your own hardware. You get control over the weights and no per-request bill. In exchange you run the GPUs, write the engine integration, handle streaming yourself, and check each model's licence before shipping. There is no vendor support when something breaks the week before launch.

Move voices into a character platform

This is the route Neocortex is built for, and it works best in a fixed order:

  1. List every voice in your game and where each one is used: cutscenes, barks, tutorial lines, runtime dialogue.
  2. Check your rights. Cloning needs a recording you have the rights to use, typically from a performer who agreed to it. A voice you only licensed inside Resemble is not yours to clone.
  3. Recreate each voice. Create a free account, then clone from a short recording, or describe a voice in a sentence and pick from generated options. Pro includes 5 custom voices and Team includes 20.
  4. Render a test set. Generate ten or so of each character's existing lines and play them next to the originals before you commit.
  5. Switch the runtime path last, once the voices pass that side-by-side check.

Then give each voice a character. In the visual editor, Personality, Emotion, Knowledge, Intents and Actions turn a voice into an NPC that answers players out loud and does things in your game. Replies arrive with an emotion tag on each line, so animation can follow the voice.

Speech streams in both directions, so replies start quickly, and each character keeps the same voice in every conversation. Commercial use is included on Pro and Team, and testing in the browser editor never uses credits. To compare other voice options for characters, see our AI voice tools roundup.

Our recommendation

If Resemble was your plan for game voices, move the voices you have rights to into Neocortex now, starting with one main character. You keep the voice, add speech recognition and a character around it, and get engine SDKs for Unity, Unreal Engine 5 and Godot (beta) maintained by a team whose whole product is AI characters for games.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Resemble AI still selling voice cloning?

No. Resemble stopped selling voice AI to new customers and now focuses on deepfake detection, while it supports existing voice customers. Neocortex offers voice cloning and voice design, with 5 custom voices on Pro and 20 on Team.

Does Resemble AI still have a Unity plugin?

Its Unity and Unreal integration pages are no longer online, and its pricing page lists only detection products. Neocortex has a Unity SDK for Unity 6 with six sample scenes, plus Unreal Engine 5, Godot (beta) and a Web API.

What happened to Resemble's open-source voice models?

Resemble says its open models stay free to build on under its Voice AI Research name, without commercial voice support. Neocortex is a managed alternative where voices, speech recognition and the character run in one service with engine SDKs.

Can a cloned voice be used in a commercial game?

Only if you have the rights to the source voice and your tool's licence allows it. On Neocortex, commercial use needs the Pro or Team plan, and you may only clone voices you have the rights to.

What is the best Resemble AI alternative for game voices?

Game teams need cloning, runtime speech and an engine integration together. Neocortex covers all three and adds AI characters that answer the player out loud, with a free plan to start.
